Origins
The Idea
The idea of Barshiyya was born from a single question followed by a single concept: In past centuries, Europeans and the West naturally wore garments of their own. As time passed and modernity arrived, their clothing evolved accordingly. Add colonialism to the equation, and you'll find civilizations that once stood tall now adopting the same fashions and attire. Today, we wear jeans, hoodies, and other such pieces.
Here I pose the question: What would our clothing look like had we held on to our own attire, had we been the civilization that dominated the past centuries? The idea that follows is this: Most of what we wear today are offshoots of Western clothing born of Western thought, which has, in many respects, colonized our minds entirely.
Barshiyya is one expression of my question. There are undoubtedly many others. But I begin here: with one Barshiyya, then a hundred.
الفكرة
نبعت فكرة برشيّة من سؤال واحد تبعه مفهوم واحد: كان الاوروبيون و الغرب يرتدون ملابسهم الخاصة لهم في العصور الماضية على طبيعة الحال. و مع مرور الازمان و مجيئة الحداثة تطورت ألبستهم كما نعام. فأضف الاستعمار إلى المسألة و ستجد حضارات كانت شامخة في أيامها تلجأ الآن إلى نفس الأزياء و الملابس. فأصبحنا نرتدي "الجينز" و "الهودي" و غيرهم من قطع.
هنا أسأل السؤال. كيف تكون ملابسنا إن تمسكنا بألبستنا و كنا الحضارة المسيطرة عبر القرون الماضية؟ و المفهوم الذي يليه هو التالي: أكثر ما نرتديه هو مشتقات من اللبس الغربي الذي استعمر التفكير، في بعض النواحي، بأكمله.
